If you're using a UPnP server you can also browse by the attributes it sets, such as Picture Playlists, Albums, Rating and Keywords from a Windows 7 PC. Likewise, photo viewing works well, letting you browse the folder structure of your server.

If you're using a UPnP server you can access playlists by directly browsing the server, plus any other ways that the server cuts the music - our Windows 7 PC also presented All Artists, All Music, Composers and Genre when accessed directly. Music lets you browse by Artist and Album, but you can't create your own playlist, which is a touch annoying. Occasionally, videos wouldn't fit the screen completely and we had to adjust the settings on the video screen, including the image position and zoom level to eliminate black borders. All local videos can be resumed from where you left off.

The list of supported video file types is immense and all of our WMV, DivX, Xvid, VOB and ISO files worked flawlessly - check out the Specs page after you've red this review to see the full list of file types supported. If a film can't be categorised it appears in Unidentified Videos in the Files menu. For example, Boxee detected the Shark Tale HD WMV file as the full film and showed a thumbnail of the film poster. Impressively, it can work out what's a film and what's a show (TV programme) based on the content, and then displays a relevant thumbnail. It then scans the files to find out what you've got.
For each folder or server you add, you just have to tell the Boxee Box what type of files are stored there (music, photos and videos). It supports both SMB file shares and UPnP media servers. All you have to do is tell the Boxee Box where to look on your network. (I’m hoping that the iPhone app, Rowmote, will be updated soon so that I can launch and control Hulu Desktop from it.Impressively, the Boxee Box can also act as a standard media player, accessed through the Files menu. And it’s wonderful that you can control Hulu Desktop from the couch with Apple’s hardware remote control or an iPhone/iPod touch application that can control a Mac over a Wi-Fi connection. It’s also nice that you can navigate the interface with a mouse. Keyboard control is very easy and quite helpful when you use the Search field, which employs an onscreen keyboard that’s as clumsy to use as any other onscreen keyboard you’ve ever used with a remote control. The video looks darned good, even when displayed on a large monitor or TV screen (as would be the case for a Mac you’ve designed to be a media center and jacked into a TV or AV receiver). (Here’s evidence of the commercial interactivity that Hulu would like to keep for itself.)

When you select Video Description you may see a Buy link, which, when clicked, sends you to to purchase the movie or TV season.
If you pause a video you see a box that contains some useful commands, including Resume Play, Video Description, Video Navigation, Add to Queue, Closed Captioning (highlighted when captions are available), Rate, and Help. That video is encoded in the Flash format and can’t be downloaded. As with Hulu in a Web browser you can watch a video in full screen or within a window and skip ahead or back through the video (you can’t skip over commercials, however). Programs and movies include short-ish commercials (15 – 30 seconds) at the beginning and then sprinkled throughout the show or movie. The content available through Hulu Desktop approximates what you get from Hulu when accessing it through a Web browser.

As with these other media applications you navigate Hulu Desktop by traipsing down a series of hierarchical menu command-commands that include Now Playing, Popular, Recently Added, TV, Movies, Profiles (or your user name if you’ve logged onto Hulu with your identity), Search, Help, and Exit. The experience playing web video through Hulu Desktop isn’t terribly different from using media center applications such as Boxee, Plex, or XBMC in that you have an interface designed to be controlled with a couple of keyboard keys, a mouse, or a remote control such as Apple’s hardware remote. It did play smoothly, however, on my 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac mini with 4GB of RAM, that I use as a media center. I managed to get Hulu Desktop running on a Dual 2GHz Power Mac G5 with 1.5GB of RAM and it launched and played, though the video wasn’t smooth. This is reasonable, though not an absolute requirement. Hulu suggests that you have a Mac with an Intel Pentium Core Duo 2.0GHz or better with 2GB of RAM, running Tiger or Leopard over a 2Mbps or faster Internet connection.
